A Siberian classic

Ivan tea, or koporye tea, is made from the leaves of fireweed, a tall pink-flowering plant that covers Siberian meadows in July. The leaves are wilted, rolled and fermented, then dried. Fermentation turns the grassy fresh leaf into a smooth, slightly sweet infusion with notes of caramel, dried fruit and a meadow after rain.

Before Indian and Ceylon teas reached Europe, Ivan tea was exported from Russia in large quantities. Today it is enjoyed for its taste and for the simple fact that it contains no caffeine.

Pack sizes

The 100 g pack makes roughly 40 cups. The 500 g pack is the better value for daily drinkers and for cafés.

Frequently asked questions

How do I brew Ivan tea?

Use one teaspoon of leaves per cup. Pour water at 85–90 °C (185–195 °F), not boiling, and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. The same leaves can be brewed two or three times.

Does Ivan tea contain caffeine?

No. Ivan tea is made from fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium), a plant that does not produce caffeine, so it is a natural alternative to black and green tea in the evening.

Can I drink it cold?

Yes. Brew it double strength, let it cool and serve over ice with lemon or berries. It also works well as a base for iced herbal blends.
